Deputy Supervisor Shawn Lavin recently met with the Leising-Schlosser-Bogan Family to learn more about the family's rich military history. Valentine Leising - Army; Earl A. Leising, Sr. - Army; Gerald (Jerry) F. Schlosser- Army; and William Bogan (POW) - Army, will be honored on Sunday, August 17 during the Amherst Veterans Memorial Wall Ceremony. PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that a public hearing will be conducted by an individual to be appointed by the Supervisor of the Town of Amherst (the "Hearing Officer") in the Getzville Fire Company, Inc. Station 1 at 630 Dodge Road, Getzville, New York 14068 on August 28, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. in relation to the proposed borrowing by the Getzville Fire Company, Inc. ("the Volunteer Fire Department") to finance the certain improvements of the fire station facility located at 630 Dodge Road, Getzville, New York 14068 and the proposed issuance by the Volunteer Fire Department of an obligation (a promissory note and mortgage) Five Star Bank or other qualified lender. The proposed finance of certain improvements is of the fire station facility located at 630 Dodge Road, Getzville, New York 14068, which is used for housing and storage of firefighting apparatus, vehicles and related equipment as well as for training, administrative and related facilities in order to render fire protection service to the Town of Amherst pursuant to a contract between the Volunteer Fire Department and the Town of Amherst. The proposed finance and refinance will be in the maximum face amount of $3,500,000.00. The Getzville Fire Company, Inc. is the owner, operator and manager of the fire station facility described herein. The public hearing and the subsequent approval by the Supervisor of the Town of Amherst of the borrowing and issuance of the obligation are prerequisites to exemption from income taxation of the interest payable under the terms of such obligation, pursuant to section 103 and related sections of, and regulations under, the Internal Revenue Code. Neither the public hearing nor the subsequent approval by the Supervisor of the Town of Amherst of the borrowing creates any obligation or liability of the Town of Amherst for such obligation. Persons attending the public hearing will be given the opportunity to make brief oral statements in connection with the proposed financing, and written comments may be submitted to the Hearing Officer at or prior to the public hearing. “Road Work Ahead” signs will be found throughout the Town of Amherst this summer. The Highway Department is busy repairing roadways thanks to funding investment from the Town Board and New York State. Deputy Supervisor Shawn Lavin and Highway Superintendent Steve Floss announced that the Amherst Highway Department will spend more than $2.8 million this year to pave and repair 60 Town roads. Independent Health and the YMCA are celebrating 14 years of Fitness in the Parks. Amherst is hosting three locations: Bassett Park, Garrison Park and University at Buffalo (South Lake Village), which are part of more than 500 FREE outdoor fitness classes at parks across Western New York, led by certified YMCA instructors. All ages and skill levels are welcome to join. Parking is always free and registration is never required; just show up at the scheduled time. The Town of Amherst announces that work will begin at Paradise Park, 700 Paradise Road, East Amherst, at the end of June to allow for the addition of an ADA-compliant restroom facility. The 1,200-square foot structure will be located near the loop in the parking lot. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. Once operational, the restrooms will be accessible during Paradise Park’s hours of operation. As part of the Town's Organic Food Scrap Recycling Program, free compost (limited quantity - 5 gallon equivalent) is available to residents. The compost was created from food scraps that the Highway Department' Refuse Office collected and promotes a continued cycle composting. The Town of Amherst Highway Department – Refuse Office reminds residents that any yard waste that does not meet standards cannot be collected by Modern Disposal Services, the town’s waste management contractor. The Refuse Office is reminding residents to remove plastic packaging or containers that come with plants, flowers, mulch, etc. from yard waste. Additionally, yard waste placed in plastic trash bags will not be collected. Paper yard waste bags will be accepted. The Amherst Highway Department’s brush pickup crews will be out picking up large brush piles by appointment; please call (716) 631-7117 to schedule your address for service. Please have brush, logs and stumps out for pickup before you call. The Town Highway will only collect large unmanageable piles of logs, brush (cut to less than 8 feet in length), and tree stumps. The Town of Amherst’s annual yard waste collection program will begin on Tuesday, April 1, 2025. Homeowners are encouraged to properly dispose of yard waste to allow it to be composted, thus reducing landfill waste and cost. It is estimated that this program saves more than $950,000 in landfill costs annually. For directions on how to properly place yard waste, please see the links below. Anyone who plans to dig should call 811 or go to their state 811 center’s website a few business days before digging to request that the approximate location of buried utilities be marked with paint or flags so that you don’t unintentionally dig into an underground utility line. 811 protects you and your community! Hitting a buried line while digging can disrupt utility service, cost money to repair, or cause serious injury or death. Always contact your 811 center, wait the required time for utilities to respond to your request, and ensure that all utilities have responded to your request before putting a shovel in the ground.Boards & Committees
